The production of Blithe Spirit is interesting because of the Knox-Mawers. Ronald Knox-Mawer was the Chief Magistrate, who with his wife, June, lived at No. 1 Downing Street in Khormaksar before moving to the large house by Little Ben.
June Knox-Mawer (1930-2006) was the Aden correspondent for the Daily Express and later became a novelist and a broadcaster for the BBC. She was known as the voice of BBC Women's' Hour in the 1980s. Her first book, The Sultans Came to Tea (1961), recorded her life as the wife of the chief magistrate in Aden, and her later book Sandstorm (1992) won the Romantic Novel of the Year prize. This book was set in the fictional state of Jehal (Lahej??) and many of the characters were thinly disguised as real people!
Jim Beament worked for Luke Thomas as did Elizabeth Carr's husband Malcolm. Also of Luke Thomas were Don Gregory (Ann Berryman's ex husband) and H.D. Griffiths. Lynette Shrubbs was a friend of Ann's.
