Located in Back Bay (Western Bay) the 300' high, one kilometre length of Slave Island lies in a north/south orientation.
It is also known by the local names of Swaya Island, Jazirah Sowayih or Jazirat al Abid. It's earlier history was notable for its association with the slave trade but in latter times it became a busy dhow building yard, then a boat junk yard.
