2006 Meeting

The most recent gathering of club members was for lunch at the Royal Over-Seas League, St. James’s, London on Saturday 23rd September, 2006.

The event kicked off with members gathering for a pre-lunch drink.  The company then sat down to a three course meal, followed by coffee.  After lunch the Aden Dinner Club Chairman, Geoffrey Roberts, addressed the members about Club business.  Everyone then settled back to listen to two members who had volunteered to give presentations.

Peter Hinchcliffe

Firstly Peter Hinchcliffe, an ex Political Officer spoke about the book - Without Glory in Arabia:  The British Retreat from Arabia - which he had recently published with John Ducker and Maria Holt.  The book tells the story of the final few years of British rule in Aden and the neighbouring Eastern and Western  Aden Protectorates, and the final British withdrawal from the Colony.

Peter also spoke about his time in Aden, which he illustrated with a slide show taken from his personal collection. Without Glory in Arabia is available from Thomson Publishing Services Ltd., Customer Services, Cheriton House, North Way, Andover, SP10 5BE.  RRP £29.50.

Next George Raine spoke about his time in Aden as an Army doctor on a short service commission.  George also showed slides to illustrate his talk, and he spoke with humour and sensitivity about his work, his patients, the Yemeni people and life ’up country’ from Aden.
